The Coral Garden is an interactive live performance & installation that invites children to engage with exciting technology that responds to their touch and voice. By blending traditional craftsmanship with modern sensing technology, the performance and installation creates a truly immersive and magical experience. Exhibition & Live Performances
In February 2020, the Coral Garden was installed at St Ann’s Library, Nottingham, as part of the Nottingham Festival of Science and Curiosity.
Over six days, young audiences explored the vibrant underwater-inspired world, brought to life through five live performances by Sophie Johnson-Hill, captivating early years visitors with storytelling and movement.
The Coral Garden offered a playful, sensory-rich environment, inspiring curiosity about both the natural world and the creative possibilities of technology.
At the heart of the installation were hyperbolic crochet corals, lovingly handmade by local Knit & Natter groups.
Light up the Coral Garden using their voices. Discover magical underwater sounds by tickling the urchins.

The variety of textures and sounds. My 11 month old loved it and my 2 year old loved using her imagination making the fish swim around and 'splashing' in the water. It is amazing as it is but if it was in a darker room the lights would look even more fabulous.
"The interaction of the staff and how the kids were engaged in investigating the coral reef. Would love this to be a regular activity in the library.
Installation was able to stimulate his attention and curiosity. Lights colours songs and stories. It was perfect."
